THE GREEN PASTURE LANDS – THE KING’S FOREST – OBELISCO DI NELSON AND HIS DUKEDOOM
We’ll be in the Nebrodi regional park, one of the biggest parks in Italy, known as Sicily’s greenbelt. The tour will start off from the Segheria forestry barracks, and will wind its way through oak woods and water springs. Following the same route, it’ll be possible to cross the fertile nebrodian grasslands used as cattle pasture, to reach l’Obelisco di Nelson, where it’ll be possible to admire the majestic views of Mount Etna, the King’s forest and the Palermitani appennines.
Once upon a time, these lands belonged to the Dukes of Bridgport, ancestors of Admiral Nelson, who was bestowed it by the Bourbons, after his victory during the ‘Moti Napoletani’. The obelisk used to be the symbol of Nelson’s estate, now it’s a stopping place for hikers.
At the end of the trip, it’ll be possible to visit Nelson’s castle, although it’s said he never lived there.
